3Wow. I had no idea that there was that much controversy over something this silly. In Eastern Washington (State), the common term is "pop" or "coke". We don't attack people who use "soda" or any other words. It's idiocy to do so, as they are probably not going to change their stripes. And those of you who use this as a political stage need to get a life and stop Bush- and America-whacking. Also, Eastern Pennsylvanians look like a bunch of jerks with inferiority complexes when they jump on Western Pennsylvanians like that.

1Unfortunately, despite your kind foresight in providing an unlimited (or limited to an as yet unknown quantity) character field, you have not also provided any user-accessible Markov process delineation tools by which I may display the simple matrix equation whereby I (existentially) derive that term that I find most appropriate given the specific socio-psycho-political situation in which I find myself desirous of delineating my requirement for a sugared, carbonated beverage. Laying this shortcoming aside, [I find that I am also spurred to make this brief response to your survey that I may remedy the sad dearth of unusual responses that I find are (inexplicably) lacking from your Washington state respondents.] Putting that by the way, I shall bring myself directly to the point and address this issue directly, coming immediately to the point and not beating any further around the bush. I would say, in the fullness of time, all things being equal, taking one thing with another, and--generally--with an eye toward the only certainty that we all live with that the universe is constantly in flux (or immutable--can't remember which)--it rather depends.

1"POP". Honestly, what is up with people saying "Coke" if they don't mean "Coca-Cola" the specific brand? Do you say you want manacotti if you just want any kind of Italian food? Do you call your shoes "Nikes" if they're Adidas? As for the Soda-sayers, they seem to be mostly New Yorkers and Californians, who think they run the country anyways.

1OK. . .So I said Pop and then when I was reading all the "other" responses, I decided to add my thoughts to the "other" category also. . .My daughters and I have regularly had this kind of conversation about soda vs pop since my oldest went to college in Arizona 3 years ago where everyone says "soda". I think this is a harmless/fun way to study/reflect on language/semantics/regional differences in language. As a literacy specialist it is quite fascinating to me AND my daughter who now resides in Arizona has discovered other differences in "terms" - pronunciations - etc. Thanks for gathering the data!

1Now, living in California, I call it "soda" or "soda pop"(!). Growing up in Seattle, and when living in Michigan, I called it "pop". When my mother was growing up in Appalachia [not Boston, but WV and western MD], she called it "tonic".
