| 37 | Historically, the correct term is 'phosphate', which was defined by soda jerks as being a flavored syrup mixed with carbonated water. 'Soda's were what we today call floats. Therefore Soda is clearly WRONG and pop is more acceptable as a shortening of phosphate. |

| 4 | Wow. I had no idea that there was that much controversy over something this silly. In Eastern Washington (State), the common term is "pop" or "coke". We don't attack people who use "soda" or any other words. It's idiocy to do so, as they are probably not going to change their stripes. And those of you who use this as a political stage need to get a life and stop Bush- and America-whacking. Also, Eastern Pennsylvanians look like a bunch of jerks with inferiority complexes when they jump on Western Pennsylvanians like that. |

SODA is used when referring to the future tense as in "Would you like a Soda/I will have a Soda/Grab me a Soda." and COKE is used when referring to any Cola based drink regardless of brand (ie. Pepsi, RC, Like, Shasta, etc.) |

| 3 | pop. is this word used to describe soda because of the carbonation or the noise it makes when the can is opened? i asked someone in Indiana once why she called it "pop" and that was her answer. well thats just plain retarded. i dont call a cat "meow". i dont call a baby "waaa" please. as i look at my soda on my desk now.. it says plain as day on the can "A&W Cream Soda" . if the company that is producing the product has labeled it as soda, then my friends ... it is (TM) and ready to go as soda. just accept it you northern hicks and toothless southern rednecks, pop is what you call "yer daddy". soda is what you call your beverage. |

| 3 | It's pop. It comes from "soda pop". Pop is the noun, soda is an adjective that describes pop. Things are properly referred to by the noun, not the adjective. You say "tissue" for facial tissue, not "facial". If you ask for a facial, in some places you're going to get popped in the nose. "Pop" is the noun. "Soda" is the adjective. "Pop" is the correct term. End of discussion. |

| 2 | Thank you, this is an extremely important topic, and a concern of mine for many years!! This survey will clear up a lot of issues. I use either one depending on who I'm talking to. Soda, for some reason, seems more formal, pop seems like a slang term from where I grew up in Indiana. I think I started using Soda when I moved to Chicago. When our family lived in Hannibal Missouri, the other kids made fun of us when we said "pop". I said, what do you call it? "Sodie-pop or sodie", they would reply. Most people I met when I lived there seemed to confuse "a's" and "i's". For example, they would say Indiani and Missoura. I never quite understood that. If I use Coke it means Coca-cola but no other soft drink. There, I just used soft drink and I didn't even realize it. I never SAY soft drink, I must just use it when I write. Keep up the good work. |

| 2 | dear soda drinkers of America, Canada and everywher else (yes I said SODA drinkers), heres whats up. it is called SODA, S-O-D-A, got it? pop is a nickname for your dad, a type of stupid music and what popcorn does. it is NOT the wonderfully sweet and fizzy drink that everyone knows and loves. as for coke, i slightly agree becuase if i want a cola-flavored drink i always ask for coke even if they boldly advertize pepsi on the wall, coke is the superior cola brand and should be recognized. as for all other carbonated drinks (i.e- sprite, dr.pepper, root beer, etc.) they are called SODA!, and for that person who gave the explination that pop is short for phosphate, big deal, no one says phospate and they shouldnt say pop. Not to mention in the 50's they had SODA shops, and SODA fountain, and SODA jerks. do any of those things contain the work pop??.... NO! in conclusion, SODA is best, and althought CT may be a small state it kicks ass has a great college b-ball team and we all drink SODA!!! |

| 2 | I grew up saying pop, but switched to saying soda when I was a waitress. I felt that soda had a much softer sound to it. Pop is short and abrupt. During college many of my mid-west friends teased me because I said soda. I just moved to Virginia this past year and I fit in well saying soda. |
Iowa |
| 2 | Its intresting that so many people have said that they started calling it pop then when they moved too an area of larger population changed to soda. I suspect that this is because most people realise how stupid pop sounds (stupid in that country - uneducated sort of sense). The other thing that I realised looking at these responces is that a lot of people who call it pop felt compeled to write something justifying it here. I suspect this is because even they realise how stupid it sounds. |
Missouri |
| 2 | I say them all. My father is in the Coast Guard and we move around a lot--so I've grown up in the southeast, far south, and all the way up here in Alaska. Whatever I say usually reflects where I am--it's been 'pop' more recently, because we moved recently from Kentucky. And, besides--there are too many Coastie brats (children of Coast Guard members) running around for there to be a major preference for beverage terms here. Oh, did I mention?--I'm only 12 years old. |

When does "pop" or "soda" ever need to be used, ever? It doesn't, people, it doesn't. Ever. Never ever. Never ever again, should anybody say either of those two words. |

| 2 | As she stands in the clearing, the cold wind dances through the trees, swirling her golden mane over her diaphanous, silken black gown. The full moon melts into the paleness of her skin. As she stirs the cauldron of zinfandel she chants an other worldly incantation. From vials as old as the echos of time she adds minute pinches of her ancestry. Her slender fingers rub together as the grains fall, releasing their magic as they touch the fermenting must. On her face is the look of both good and evil, of love and hate, of life and sex and all that sirs you. What is this unearthly potion? |
