5Historically, the correct term is 'phosphate', which was defined by soda jerks as being a flavored syrup mixed with carbonated water. 'Soda's were what we today call floats. Therefore Soda is clearly WRONG and pop is more acceptable as a shortening of phosphate.

1Used to call it pop until moving to Fla 8yrs ago then had to change to soda--was always questioned "what's pop"
1Ok the term is Pop, soda is soda water or for cleaning pots and bathtubs, Coke is stupid why would i say Coke if i wanted a sprite? Coke is a catchall for any Colas, not for any pop. You dont say sheetrock when u are putting up luann board do you? So why would u say coke thats just plain stupid, on another note most people i know who say soda are stupid and anybody who would confuse asking for a pop with calling dad is stupid too.
1Grewup in upstate NY and I call it pop, I'm now in college and trying to convert all of the people from NYC from soda to pop, it's only a matter of time
1belly wash...as per my scottish grandmother
1I don't think it matters because as long as we know that all of these words mean the same thing, then people should be allowed to choose which one they want to use. Now if you're wondering...I use the term "soda," although I know that many people say "pop." Until now I didn't realize that "coke" was a term that other people used to generally describe every type of soft drink. Actually that's a little silly to me because Coke (which I always thought of as short for Coca-Cola) is one specific brand, but if that's what some people like to use then good for them. Hey, it's a free country! 8o)

1Hey person who wrote this..."Pop is correct. Calling it soda implies soda water, and strikes me as an east/west coast attempt to sound sophisticated - like there's anything sophisticated about drinking sugar water. Even calling it coke makes more sense than soda." The person who wrote this obviously is a redneck who is jealous of his cosmopolitan superiors living on the coasts. Guess what? We are more sophisticated than you. We can speak english correctly. There are some of you who claim pop is the correct term because it is short for soda-pop. In that case, soda is short for soda-pop, too. It just sounds less like a hick is saying it.
1I use both depends on where i am Pop is used more in western new york but i spent time across state where soda is used
1I say "coke" if I want a coca-cola These stupid southern hicks never cease to amuse me, Pop is something you would expect a child to say..All educated adults know that Soda is the correct terminology !
1Seltzer Water w a twist of lemon

1I always either specify type such as root beer or cream soda, or the brand (f it's Sprite or any of the more common types)
1I grew up in Long Island, where we either say Soda or use the brand name, or just call it coke, and have the waiter ask if pepsi is alright, and it is, because I really don't care what brand it is (same with Sprite and 7-up). Now, I go to school in Pittsburgh, PA, where there is a gross overusage of the word "pop", so I try to counter that by making a point to say soda, so I guess I mainly use soda. "Pop" just doesn't sound natural enough. "Pop Machine." Please.

1effin-soda - like the brooklyn alphabet - effin A, effin B, effin C, etc - seriously, i always thought pop is what they used in historical movies from the 1950s. Then again, the New Yorker map is correct anyway, so you might as well throw out the rest of the results between the coasts anyway! They are still in the 1950s. When they get electricity and indoor plumbing, they'll switch to soda.

1We use "Pop" in general for coke, pepsi or any type of similar drinks, however "Soda is used for a more sophisticated carbonated flavored or not type of water.

1pop is too short, can be easily confused for another word in speech that way. plus it ends in a consonant making it harder to pronounce clearly. soda is more pleasing to the ears.
1I live in NYC and if I walked around saying "pop" I'd get shot. Its not the 1950s anymore. it's SODA
1Someone I work with from Oregon says that they call it pop because they're being polite by not referring to it on a "first name basis" I say if you're going to swallow it, you can't get more intimate than that, so New Yorkers call it SODA!
1Your all idoits, who cares. pop, cola, soda, coke. we all f'n kno what it means.
1I Call it soda. Soda sounds like you're a millionaire. Pop sounds like you live in a trailor with the Southern flag painted on it.
1I prefer soda more. I have never seen anything on T.V. or in the movies where the people say "pop". Soda is much more cooler and less dorkier than pop.
1I hate this site. The only reason "pop" won is probably because the owners of this site say it. NERDS!!!!!!! This is silly! Think of it! They're just trying to make us all argue. I guess its working.
1I grew up in Rochester also and I always called it Soda. Pop just doesn't sound intelligent. Granted this is a petty argument anyway, but hey, freedom of speech and ideas. Call it what you like, we all know what we're talking about.
1it's soda you idiots-are you even REAL NY'ers?
1I'm from upstate NY, and it's soda. It's not just that I call it soda .. that's what it is. Even the soda companies call it soda, so I'm not sure why there's such a big debate to begin with ...
1Any idiot that call soda pop needs a very hard, firm smacking, and will recieve one from me if they would like to disagree
1soda is waht you drink, pop is a thruway ny (rochester to buffalo thing)
1Soda- Coke is a rival of pepsi, nothing more. As for pop, please. No normal American of the 21st century calls it pop.
1Jelen Juice
1It's common among my friends and family to call the drink "soda", but to refer to empty containers as "pop cans" This combination may be the result of my hometown being right on the border of pop and soda territories.
1I just found this site at 714 p.m. on Jan. 5 2005, but i think its funny to read other responses. i call it "pop" even though thats what a monkey does when you shoot him. anyways...bye

1One day there was this kid named Big Daddy. He had some giant lambchops. Dude, but then he shaved those big daddys off. It was strawful. So I called my man (Rebel) Michael Saysnof and teamed him up with fellow camo Fiddy Pound. They said, "Hey big daddy, why don't you put yourself inbetween two buns and dream big?" He said "NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF NOF ." So then Plingy Jones popped out of the air and said "WEENGOOW WOOGNEEEWW!!!" Stokes killed him with $150. He froze his pants.

1How can you say people who say "pop" are unintelligent? I graduated from Berkeley College with a 3.9 GPA and I say "pop". I grew up in Kentucky where, of course, that is what they say. I still say "pop" and I am far more intelligent than most of you that are posting comments. It doesn't matter what you say as long as people know what you mean. Quit being immature and leave people alone who aren't the way you want them to be.
1It's pop. It comes from "soda pop". Pop is the noun, soda is an adjective that describes pop. Things are properly referred to by the noun, not the adjective. You say "tissue" for facial tissue, not "facial". If you ask for a facial, in some places you're going to get popped in the nose. "Pop" is the noun. "Soda" is the adjective. "Pop" is the correct term. End of discussion.
1Soda and Coke interchangably
1Sweet drink
1Its POP, not soda. If you order a SODA in western ny they will give you club soda. The "city" people don't know what they are talking about
1In Western New York I hear 'pop' the most. It makes sense...soda pop. So, fairly, I think that 'soda is good, too. Also, the bubbles pop...i feel i fizzzy, POPping in my mouth. They all make sense... except for Coke. Here, if you say "i would like a Coke" you will get nwhat you asked for... a Coca-cola. It is absurd to ask for a Coke, then say you want a pepsi - which, by the way is NOT a horrible drink like I see people think. Coke was the first, but that doesnt mean a thing. THe phonograph was made before the iPod, but I dont jam out to my phonograph.

1Wow! I was just reading some of the answers people are giving and I can't believe people feel so strongly about this. I live in Buffalo and have lived here my whole life. In Buffalo we usually use a brand name. We don't just ask for a soda, soft drink, pop, or soda pop but instead we ask for Sprite, Pepsi, Coke, Sierra Mist…
